Microplastic beats plankton

In the water laboratory of our Indonesian partner Inspirasi, students examine the water sample they have taken from the river under a microscope. They look for plankton. Meanwhile, Inspirasi’s ecologists tell them that plankton is the main food source for fish. Fish that they eat, just like many other animal species do. A river without plankton is a dead river. Unfortunately, the children find more microplastics than plankton in the water. In this way they experience that life in the river is threatened.

Makara believes in the power of learning through play. Together with our Dutch desing partner Northern Light we want to boost youth river education by building YUYU River Education Islands, the ideal learning environment for this on the river with design thinking.
